Sororities
The first social sorority on campus was Chi Sigma Phi, a local sorority formed on January 19, 1967. Sigma Phi Sigma starts eight days later to become the second local sorority to organize. This inspired the creation of a third fraternity in February of 1967 which expanded the young Greek system to three fraternities and two sororities.

Chi Sigma Phi became a colony of Phi Mu on February 25, 1968 and received their charter on May 18, 1968 to become the first national sorority on campus. Sigma Phi Sigma becomes the second national sorority when they are granted a charter from Zeta Tau Alpha. However, the decline in membership in fraternities and sororities nationwide in the early 70’s also impacts the two sororities at UNCW. Zeta Tau Alpha goes inactive in 1974 and Phi Mu soon follows.

UNCW would not see another sorority return until Delta Zeta established a chapter on November 24, 1979. Phi Beta Psi organizes as a local sorority on December 12, 1981 to once again give UNCW two sororities. They colonized with Alpha Delta Pi on February 12, 1983 and are installed as a chapter on September 29, 1983.

Two additional local sororities are added when Alpha Lambda Omega starts on February, 5, 1984 and Beta Chi Omega forms on October 1, 1985. Beta Chi Omega affiliates as a colony of Alpha Xi Delta and is installed as a chapter in 1987.

The Greek system rapidly expanded to eight sororities when Alpha Phi (1989), Chi Omega (1990), Alpha Gamma Delta (1991) and Sigma Sigma Sigma (1991) all planted chapters at UNCW.

The newest sorority that will join the Greek system is Alpha Chi Omega who was recently approved to start a colony, bringing the total to nine.Sororities remain popular at UNCW  and continue to be an active part of the campus life.
