About This Website
This website was created to promote Greek involvement and preserve our heritage by chronicling the history of Greek life at UNCW.
It is true that a mere 9% of university undergraduates nationally are members of either a fraternity or a sorority. For those that do, they typically rank among the highest achievers. That’s because fraternities and sororities stress the importance being involved and members gain confidence by taking on leadership positions. They learn to balance a social life with scholarship and service. Perhaps that explains why nearly 80% of the top executives in Fortune 500 companies were members of a fraternity or sorority.
Greek membership exceeds the national average at UNCW with nearly 11% of the student body participating. Greeks at UNCW have forged a rich legacy of learning, leadership and loyalty. Their tremendous sense of pride continues to serve as a benefit to the entire university community.
The Greek system has had a positive impact on many lives, from the many long-lasting friendships that were created to the leadership lessons learned. The hope is to provide the same opportunity to those who will follow.
Therefore, UNCWGreeks.com encourages Greek alumni to give back to their fraternity, give back to their sorority and give back to their great university.
UNCWGreeks.com is maintained by former officers of the IFC at UNCW in a collaborative effort to independently promote and preserve our Greek past. UNCW (also known as UNC Wilmington or The University of North Carolina Wilmington) is a state university located in Wilmington, North Carolina.
UNCWGreeks.com is an independent website and is not affiliated with, or endorsed by, any fraternity, sorority, or UNCW. While most of the information used is from oral history interviews, additional resources include various collected written materials from local fraternities and sororities, chapters of national fraternities and sororities; and the Greek Reference Guide. Our UNCWGreeks Web Poll questioned followers about which of the five currently dormant fraternities at UNCW they would most like to see return to campus. The results indicated that Chi Phi was selected with 47% followed by Lambda Chi Alpha at 24%. Since the poll was originally conducted, LCA has announced plans to recolonize. They were present at UNCW from 1989 to 1998.
Chi Phi has not indicated whether they intend to reestablish a chapter. They were an actice part of campus life from 1976 to 2006.
Results of the poll showed that 11% wanted to see Theta Chi (1997-2007) revived while 9% selected Delta Upsilon (1966-1976). Sigma Phi Epsilon finished last at 3% while 8% claimed they had no desire to any of the old fraternities re-chartered.
